RAF Boulmer personnel have been paying tribute to an RAF hero at the unveiling of a new memorial dedicated to his memory.Flying Officer Cyril Barton 22 lost his life when his Halifax Bomber crashed in Ryhope, Sunderland on March 31, 1944.Flying Officer Barton was captain and pilot of a Halifax of 578 Squadron that took off from Burn in North Yorkshire as part of a 795-bomber aircraft offensive against the city of Nuremburg. During the raid 96 bombers were shot down, 545 aircrew were killed and 700 men failed to return home.Flying Officer Barton’s sisters; Mrs Cynthia Maidment and Mrs Joyce Voysey.
