'When we say their name we remember them..."
Visits from volunteers at the Victoria Cross Trust inspired children from Greentop school Thorne to create information boards of local Victoria Cross recipients as well as a play in which they told the story of their local heroes. The team visited the school to tell them stories behind George Wyatt VC of Sprotbrough and John Harper VC of Dunscroft. The children researched both soldiers and created information boards which were then placed in the memorial park in Thorne adjacent to the war memorial.

The children then visited their local cemetery where they were taught about the military graves that remember casualties from WW1 through to Afghanistan where a parent of former students killed in that conflict is interred.

The children visited the war memorial where they were asked how do we remember those killed in all conflicts. One student replied:
'When we say their name we remember them..."
Another student pointed out that the war memorial was dirty and asked if the VCT could clean it. Not wanting to let them down the team agreed and a date was set to undertake the cleaning.

To top the whole project off the VCT presented the school with memorial plaques of John Harper VC and George Wyatt VC, received on behalf of the children by their class teachers. The children then created two paintings that were presented to Mick and Keith from the Trust after the play that they delivered to parents and grand parents. The paintings now take pride of place with other awards earned by the Victoria Cross Trust volunteers.
