This website and our organisation is dedicated to the upkeep of the graves and the memory of Victoria Cross Recipients, many of whom gave their lives in military conflict across the world.

The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration awarded to persons who in the presence of the enemy, display the most conspicuous gallantry; a daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice; or extreme devotion to duty.

Throughout history, soldiers have found themselves in harm’s way; it is what soldiers do. However, some soldiers have pushed themselves further, to a point where they know they risk their own survival in striving to protect their comrades in the heat of battle. These men have acted knowing the chances of survival are slim.

Apart from their grateful comrades, such men have received little renown for their deeds, very few ever reaching public recognition. Many died and now lie forgotten. During the Crimean War of 1854-56, it was recognised that this situation was unacceptable. Going forward, there was to be an award for soldiers who exhibited extreme bravery and even paid the highest price for their actions. This award would not recognise rank or social standing; it was awarded upon one criteria and one criteria only – valour. Produced from the bronze from Chinese cannons captured from the Russians at Sebastopol, the Victoria Cross is one of the most recognised awards for bravery and is respected across the world. There have been 1,363 recipients since 1856, with 628 being awarded in the first war alone. The recipients are British Heroes and many lie in Commonwealth War Grave cemeteries across the world, their graves well cared for. However, many lived on after their award and lie in graveyards around the UK and elsewhere. Sadly, as generations pass, a number of these graves are forgotten and over time, fall into disrepair.
