A number of mass casuaty memorials were cleaned by the Victoria Cross Trust to recognise the loss that communities in peace and war time have experienced. These included 317 sailors drowned in 1878 when HMS Eurydices capsized - 71 civilians killed in Doncaster (15) and East Cowes (56) during the blitz - 7 Trinity Lighthousemen and 6 Air raid Wardens killed in the line of duty. Perhaps the most tragic was the loss of 6 children of the Chiverton family killed in a bombing raid in Whippingham in 1942. After the work was completed a member of the Chiverton family commented that she was so happy that they had not been forgotten.
