The team were in Rodmarton today, Monday 13th February 2023 to clean the grave of Henry Lysons VC. The grave had become coated in dirt and lichen and was in need of cleaning. After assessments the Doff steam cleaning system was utilised to restore the meorial to its former glory. In addition, as part of the Christie Vc legacy the team presented the church warden with a commemorative plaque for display in the church.
The action that led to the award of the VC is:
Lieutenant HENRY LYSONS HLOBANE 28 March 1879 He was 20 years old and serving in the 2nd Bn, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). Together with Captain Campbell and Private Edmund Fowler, he advanced between the rocks to a cave commanded by the enemy. Advancing in single file to the mouth of the cave, they opened fire, driving the Zulus away in disarray. Campbell was killed during this action. Lysons died on 24 July 1907.
