James Adams VC - Restored June 2025

Monday 16th June 2025 saw the team visit Ashwell churchyard, the final resting place of James Ashwell VC to restore his grave. Whilst there the team also restored the war memorial, the graves of military colleagues as well as two babies who died in 1945.

James Ashwell VC's citation reads:

Reverend JAMES ADAMS KILLA KAZI 11 December 1879 He was 40 years old and serving in the Bengal Ecclesiastical Department, Indian Army when he spotted two men from the 9th Lancers trapped underneath their horses in a deep ravine and about to drown. Well aware from the shouting and firing that the enemy were nearly upon them, he jumped into the water, pulled the men clear of their horses and then escaped on foot. Adams was known as the ‘Fighting Parson’. He died from an acute neuritis on 24 October 1903. After his death a stained-glass window was dedicated to him at his church in Stow Bardolph, Norfolk.
