%th August 2024 saw us keep a promise to complete repairs and restorations to the family plot of Robert (Rupert) Sherbrooke VC at Oxton in Nottinghamshire. Sherbrooke VC had been repaired during 2023 and an inspection of his grandfather's grave William Sherbrooke RN identified the white marble cross was listing. Flooding in the area delayed our attempts to restore but finally once the grounds had thoroughly dried we were able to stabilise and straighten William's headstone
Checking out the footings it was found that the cross sat on soil with no foundation as was often the case. The soft ground had started to give and was in need of extra support. A new footing of concrete and slab was laid and the cross replaced onto it to complete the work.
The headstone was then cleaned along with the other 6 family graves including Sherbrooke VC. In addition, we cleaned the grave of Elizabeth Darwin aged 1 and who rests adjacent to the Sherbrooke plot and in their care.
