Educating Through Touching History
Education with the Victoria Cross Trust starts at our shops in the Frenchgate Centre where we have a number of displays, artefacts and veterans to interact with. The veterans will explain the history and stories behind the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest award for valour. Having seven VC recipients with local Doncaster connections, an extraordinary fact in its own right, visitors to the shop can view a Victoria Cross, handle de-activated World War weapons. You can hear the veterans speak of the unbelievable valour exhibited by all recipients and watch the work of the accredited memorial masons restoring and cleaning military graves and memorials across the country on a specially produced video.
The education doesn’t stop there as our veteran volunteers are also available to present on the work of the VC Trust and the history of the award to schools, Army, Navy and Air cadets, professional groups and other interested parties.
Schools across Doncaster have already booked our speakers to inspire their children in the story of their local heroes and participate in research projects associated with memorials and the names of those who served and are buried in Commonwealth War Graves.
Our team will bring artefacts to the school or group and explain the local stories behind the VC Trusts’ restoration work and give an insight into the stories of all local veterans and casualties. This often inspires the children in their school work writing about their learning, producing artwork and even plays all ensuring that 'whilst their names are spoken, we will remember them'.
